Inventor of the Economiser

Green’s has been a pioneer in heat recovery for over two centuries, beginning with Edward Green’s invention of the economiser in 1845 — a breakthrough that reduced coal consumption by 15–25%, transforming industrial energy efficiency.

Key milestones in our history include the inauguration of our factory in Wakefield by King George V in 1912 and the development of extended surface finned tubes in the 1960s.

Over 200 years on from our foundation, we are now part of Ropsley, and we’re continuing to build on our legacy by developing advanced solutions that serve industries worldwide.

1845 - The Birth of Innovation

Edward Green invents the Economiser, saving 15-25% in fuel consumption.

1897 - First Marine Economiser

The SS Argo, is built in Hartlepool, the first ship to have a Green's marine economiser,

1912 - A Royal Visit

King George V opens a new factory in Wakefield with a working model we still have today!

1937 - Second World War

Green's trades steam boilers for anti-aircraft shells, reinventing itself as a munitions factory.

1960 - Continued Innovation

We begin to manufacture steel H-Fin Economisers, one of the products we are globally renowned for.

1988 - Continued Growth

Following several acquisitions, the company merges with Foster Wheeler Power Products.

2010 - Green's Goes Public

Greens Power Limited is formed in 2008, part of Greens Holdings, which floats on HKSE in 2010.

2016 - A New Dawn

Following it's delisting from the HKSE, Green's once again begins manufacturing in Wakefield.

2022 - Key Acquisition

Green's acquires the IP, drawings, key equipment and team members of Hunt Thermal Technologies.

2024 - Acquired by Ropsley

We join with ACTTnow, HEGS, Hunt Thermal, Piper & PJD to offer a seamless turnkey solution.

1821 - E Green & Son Founded

Edward Green establishes a business in Wakefield manufacturing steam engines and boilers.
